If you are in Class 11 or 12 and thinking about a career at sea, the entry rules are far more specific than most “after 12th” lists suggest. Every merchant navy officer course in India is entered through the IMU-CET entrance test. You need a 60% average in Physics, Chemistry and Maths, at least 50% in English in Class 10 or Class 12, you must be unmarried, and you must clear an eyesight standard that quietly rules out many otherwise strong candidates.
Those numbers are not from a coaching brochure. They are printed in the official Indian Maritime University Prospectus 2026-27, dated 19 March 2026. This page sets out what that document actually says about the three routes open to a Class 12 student, so you can check yourself against them before spending money on anything.
Which merchant navy courses can you join straight after Class 12?
Indian Maritime University was set up by an Act of Parliament (Act 22) in November 2008 as a Central University. It runs six campuses of its own and has affiliated institutes across the country. Three of its programmes take students directly after Class 12.

Marine Engineering leads towards work in the engine room; Nautical Science and DNS lead towards the deck side. A Nautical Science graduate becomes eligible to sit the examinations for a Certificate of Competency (CoC) as a Deck Officer, which is issued by the Directorate General of Shipping and recognised internationally. The B.Tech. Marine Engineering syllabus is built in line with the international STCW convention on training and certification for seafarers.
Merchant navy eligibility after Class 12: the marks that actually count
Two numbers decide it. The first is the average of Physics, Chemistry and Maths in Class 12 — it must be at least 60%. The second is English, where you need at least 50%, and here the prospectus is more generous than students expect: the English marks may come from either your Class 10 or your Class 12 result, whichever helps you.
SC and ST candidates get a 5% relaxation in the PCM eligibility marks. That relaxation does not apply to the English requirement. A separate 5% English relaxation exists for candidates native to Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands who belong to recognised Scheduled Tribes of the islands, subject to the conditions listed in the prospectus.
All three courses also require that you are unmarried. This is a stated eligibility condition, not a preference.

Eyesight and medical standards — the part most students miss
This is where plans most often fall apart, and it is worth checking before Class 12 rather than after. The vision standard is different for the deck side and the engine side, and it is measured unaided — that is, without spectacles or lenses.

Beyond the eye chart, the prospectus requires good binocular vision, full movement of the eyeballs in all directions, pupils reacting normally to light, and no morbid condition of either eye or eyelid that could worsen or recur. Normal colour vision is compulsory and is tested using the Ishihara chart. At admission you must produce a certificate of medical fitness issued by a doctor approved by the Directorate General of Shipping — a certificate from your family doctor will not do.
What the IMU CET question paper looks like
For the undergraduate technical programmes — B.Sc. Nautical Science, B.Tech. Marine Engineering and DNS — the IMU-CET paper carries 200 multiple-choice questions. The syllabus is English, General Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Class 12 level. There is negative marking of 0.25 marks for every wrong answer, so blind guessing costs you.
In practical terms, that means your Class 12 Physics, Chemistry and Maths preparation is the preparation — you are not studying a separate syllabus. General Aptitude and English are the two sections students under-prepare for, and they are worth targeted practice because they are the cheapest marks in the paper.
Candidates applying for the February 2027 DNS batch must sit IMU-CET 2026, because no separate entrance test is held for that batch.
After the rank list: how admission actually happens
Clearing IMU-CET does not by itself give you a seat. IMU issues a Rank Certificate to qualified candidates, and that certificate is what admission everywhere depends on — IMU’s own campuses, its affiliated institutes and non-affiliated institutes alike.
- If you want an IMU campus, you register on IMU’s counselling portal, which opens after the rank list is published.
- If you want an affiliated or non-affiliated institute, you approach that institute directly and follow its own admission process, carrying your rank.
One route has an extra condition worth knowing early: admission to the DNS programme at affiliated institutes is open only to sponsored candidates — that is, candidates sponsored by a ship-owning or ship-managing company — who have also qualified in IMU-CET. If nobody has sponsored you, that particular door is closed regardless of your rank.

Before you pay any agent
The Directorate General of Shipping, under the Government of India, is the authority that examines and certifies merchant navy officers and regulates maritime training. Its website carries standing advisories asking seafarers and their families to stay alert to deceitful schemes and to be careful about recruiting agencies. Merchant navy admission attracts a lot of paid intermediaries, and a promise of a “guaranteed seat” or a “guaranteed ship” is the clearest sign that something is wrong.
Two habits protect you. Check any institute’s approval status and any course claim against the official DG Shipping and IMU websites rather than a WhatsApp forward. And remember that no genuine official ever asks for your password or an OTP — not for an entrance form, not for counselling, not for a medical.
