Three national application windows are open this week, and every one of them has fields you cannot correct after you hit submit. An online exam form is not like a school worksheet — there is usually no eraser. This guide covers what to settle before you open the form, which entries tend to be locked for good, and how to handle uploads and payment without losing a window.

Settle these before you open the form
Most avoidable errors happen because a student starts the form and then goes looking for information halfway through. Decide all of this first:
- Your name spelling. Use the spelling exactly as it appears on your Class 10 certificate, including initials. Not the spelling on your bank passbook or your school ID if they differ.
- Your date of birth. Again, as on the Class 10 certificate — that is the document most boards and exam bodies treat as proof of age.
- Your category. If you are claiming SC, ST, OBC, EWS, PwD or BPL status, you need the certificate in hand before you start, not after.
- Which programme or paper you are applying for. UG or PG, which stream, which subject combination.
- A phone number and email you will still control next year. Admit cards, result links and counselling notices all go there. A number that belongs to a coaching centre or a relative is a bad idea.
The entries that are usually locked
Different exams lock different fields, so read the instructions page for the exam you are actually taking. CLAT 2027 is a clear worked example: the Consortium’s official instructions state that once you submit, you cannot change the programme you applied for, and you cannot change your category. A category once claimed cannot be altered later. That is published on the official CLAT 2027 UG instructions page.
As a general rule, treat name, date of birth, category, gender, programme and exam-centre preference as one-way doors. Some bodies open a short correction window afterwards and some do not. Never fill a field planning to fix it later.
Photograph, signature and certificates
Upload rules are specific and forms reject files silently often enough that you should check your uploads before moving on. For CLAT 2027, the official instructions say all uploads — photograph, signature, and the category, PwD or BPL certificate where you are claiming one — must be in PDF format, and no attestation is required.
Practical points that apply almost everywhere: use a recent photograph against a plain background, sign on white paper with a dark pen and scan it rather than photographing it at an angle, and keep the original files somewhere you can find them again. You will need the same set for counselling months later.
Paying the fee
An application is not complete until the fee is paid. Submitting the form and stopping there is one of the most common ways students lose a window entirely.
CLAT 2027 again gives concrete numbers, published on the official instructions page: ₹4,000 for General and OBC candidates and ₹3,500 for SC, ST, BPL and PwD candidates, with an optional ₹500 if you want previous years’ question papers. The fee is non-refundable and non-adjustable, bank charges are borne by the candidate, and final submission with payment closes on 31 October 2026 at 11:59 PM.
If a payment fails but money leaves your account, do not immediately pay again on a second attempt without checking the portal — log in, see whether the application shows as paid, and use the exam body’s help desk if it does not. What you must never share
No genuine exam body, help desk, counselling committee or school will ever ask you for your portal password or an OTP. Not by phone, not by WhatsApp, not by email. If someone asks, they are not who they say they are.
Keep your registration number and password to yourself, including from coaching staff who offer to “fill the form for you”. If someone else fills it, sit with them and watch every field being entered — it is your admission at stake, not theirs.
After you submit
- Download and save the confirmation page or filled application as a PDF. Print one copy.
- Note your registration or application number somewhere other than your phone.
- Check the payment status on the portal, not just your bank SMS.
- Re-read every entry against your Class 10 certificate one final time. If a correction window exists, this is when you use it.
- Put the exam date in a calendar, and check the portal again a few weeks before it for the admit card notice.
Applying early matters more than it looks. Portals slow down badly in the last two days of any window, and a payment gateway that times out at 11:00 PM on the closing date is not something anyone can fix for you afterwards.
