The All India Council for Technical Education has issued a revised academic calendar for 2026-27, and it sets 14 September 2026 as the last date up to which a student can be admitted against a vacancy in a technical institution. The same date is the deadline for lateral-entry admission into the second year. Classes for first-year students were to begin on 17 August 2026.
If you are still waiting on a counselling round, holding a seat you are not sure about, or hoping a vacancy opens up somewhere better, 14 September is the wall. After it, an institution cannot take you in for this academic year. The circular, File No. AICTE/RB-AC-2026-27/2 dated 13 August 2026, says it is issued as per the Hon’ble Supreme Court order in MA 2380/2026 dated 12 August 2026.
AICTE revised academic calendar 2026-27: the four dates
These are the four rows in the circular, exactly as AICTE lists them for technical institutions including PGDM and PGCM institutions.

What “admitted against vacancies” actually means for you
Counselling rarely fills every seat. Candidates get an allotment and do not report, or they join and then withdraw, and those seats fall vacant. Institutions then fill them through later rounds, spot rounds or institute-level admission, depending on what the state or the national body allows.
The 14 September date is the outer limit on all of that. It is not the date of any particular counselling round — each counselling body publishes its own round schedule — it is the last date on which a technical institution may admit a student at all for 2026-27. So a spot round announced in late September, or an institute offering you a seat in October, would sit outside the calendar AICTE has laid down.
Who this affects
Anyone entering a technical course this year: B.E. and B.Tech candidates coming out of JEE Main and JoSAA, students in state engineering counselling, diploma holders taking the lateral-entry route into the second year, and PGDM and PGCM applicants. The fee-refund date has already passed
Row 1 matters in hindsight. 31 July 2026 was the last date to cancel a seat and get a full fee refund. If you cancel now, what you get back is governed by the refund rules of the institution and the counselling body, not by that full-refund window. Read the refund clause in your institute’s admission document before you withdraw from a seat you are holding.
How to check this yourself
Go to the AICTE official website and look for the “Revised Academic Calendar 2026-27” link on the home page, which opens the signed circular PDF. It is a one-page scanned circular on AICTE letterhead. Do not act on a date you have only seen on a news site or a coaching page — open the circular and read the row yourself.
Your own counselling body’s schedule sits on top of this. AICTE sets the outer boundary; the round dates that decide whether you get a seat come from JoSAA, CSAB or your state authority. Keep both open. You can track the dates we have verified on our Important Dates calendar.
What to do this week
Work out which counselling rounds you are still eligible for and when they close. If you are holding a seat, decide whether you are keeping it, because the full-refund window is gone and a late withdrawal costs you money. If you are chasing a vacancy, be ready to report at short notice with your documents in order — institutions filling vacancies late in the window move fast, and the calendar gives them no room past 14 September.
