If you have your NEET UG 2026 result in hand, the next big step is counselling — and this is where a good rank can still slip if you are not prepared. Counselling is how you actually convert your score into an MBBS, BDS, AYUSH or nursing seat, so it is worth understanding clearly before the portal opens.

[26 Aug 2026, 3:35 AM IST] MCC Notice no. 14, dated 24.08.2026 (Ref. U-11011/07/2026-MEC), has been machine-read in full from the official PDF. It confirms the Round 1 final result is live and adds one point not in the earlier page listing: Freeze and Float options have been introduced this cycle under “Changes in Allotment, Reporting, Upgradation & Withdrawal (Resignation) of Allotted Seat” in Chapter 2 of the revised UG Information Bulletin dated 20.08.2026, and candidates are told to read that chapter before reporting. Per the revised AIQ schedule dated 19.08.2026, reporting and joining at the allotted college runs to 31 August 2026, with institute verification of joined candidates on 1 September 2026. [19 Aug 2026, 1:28 PM IST] Keep the checklist below ready today. Under MCC’s Revised Schedule for Round 1 dated 13.08.2026, the Round 1 seat allotment result is due on 19 August, reporting and joining at the allotted institute runs from 20 to 25 August, and institutes verify joined candidates’ data on 26 August. As of 1:28 PM the result had not yet appeared on the official MCC UG counselling page, and Notice No. 10 dated 17.08.2026 — which extended choice filling to 11:59 PM on 18 August — did not restate a new result date. [16 Aug 2026, 3:46 PM IST] MCC has published a Revised Schedule for Round 1, notice dated 13.08.2026, and it is now listed under Current Events on the official MCC UG counselling page. Registration and payment closed at 2:00 PM on 15 August (payment facility to 5:00 PM). Choice filling stays open until 6:00 PM on 17 August, and choice locking runs from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on 17 August — the window that never opened earlier now has a firm date. Seat allotment is processed on 18 August and the Round 1 result is declared on 19 August. Reporting and joining at the allotted college runs 20–25 August, and institutes verify joined candidates’ data on 26 August. All times are server time.
[13 Aug 2026, 12:35 PM IST] The Round 1 choice-locking window has now passed without ever opening. Under the schedule MCC published on 01.08.2026, choice locking was to run from 4:00 PM on 12 August to 11:00 AM today, and choice filling was to close at that same 11:00 AM. More than an hour after the deadline, the MCC UG counselling page still carries its notice — still flagged as new — that choice locking has not started and that its timing will be announced separately. MCC has issued no revised schedule: the most recent notice on the page is still the CW supplementary list dated 11.08.2026. If you submitted choices but were never able to lock them, MCC’s own UG Information Bulletin 2026 says choices left unlocked are locked automatically as per the schedule, so submitted choices should still count. Round 1 processing is scheduled for 13–16 August and the seat allotment result for 17 August. Keep checking the MCC site rather than acting on any unofficial message. [13 Aug 2026, 9:45 AM IST] With about an hour and a quarter left before Round 1 choice filling closes at 11:00 AM today, the MCC UG counselling page still carries its notice that choice locking has not started and that the time for it will be announced separately. On what happens to choices you were never able to lock: MCC’s own UG Information Bulletin 2026 (dated 01.08.2026) answers this in its FAQ — if a candidate does not lock the choices submitted, they “will be automatically locked as per schedule”. The bulletin also states that choices once locked cannot be unlocked even by MCC, and that a printout of the system-locked choices becomes available after locking. The MCC UG counselling page continues to carry its notice that choice locking has not started and that the time for it will be announced separately. The AIQ schedule published on 01.08.2026 shows choice filling closing at 11:00 AM today, 13 August 2026, and MCC has issued no notice changing that time. [12 Aug 2026, 6:55 AM IST] Choice locking for All India Quota Round 1 opens at 4:00 PM today and runs until 11:00 AM on 13 August 2026, server time. Choice filling itself also ends at 11:00 AM on 13 August, so the two overlap for one evening and one morning. Two rules from MCC’s official UG Information Bulletin 2026 decide what happens after that. First, choices you have only saved can still be edited, but once they are locked they cannot be changed, and MCC states it will not entertain any request to alter locked choices. Second, if you never lock them yourself, the system locks your saved choices for you as per the schedule — so the order of your list at 11:00 AM tomorrow is what goes into seat allotment either way. Round 1 allotment processing runs 13 to 16 August and the result is due on 17 August 2026. The official DGME Uttar Pradesh portal has published the “UP NEET UG 2026 First Round Counselling Time Schedule” notice, and state-merit registration, registration fee, security money and document re-upload services are listed as live on the portal. Who conducts NEET counselling
Counselling happens at two levels. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) runs the All India Quota (15% of government seats), deemed and central universities, ESIC and AFMC, through its portal at mcc.nic.in. Separately, each state runs its own counselling for the remaining 85% state-quota seats. Most students register for both — the All India round and their home-state round — to keep the widest set of options open.
How the rounds work
NEET counselling runs in several rounds — typically Round 1, Round 2, a mop-up round and a stray-vacancy round. In each round you register, pay the fee, fill and lock your choices of college and course in order of preference, and then wait for seat allotment. If you are allotted a seat you are happy with, you report and confirm it; if not, you can often try again in the next round. The single most important habit is to fill your preferences honestly and in true order — the system always tries to give you the highest choice it can.
Documents to keep ready
- NEET UG 2026 admit card and scorecard/rank letter
- Class 10 and Class 12 mark sheets and certificates
- Photo identity proof (Aadhaar/passport)
- Passport-size photographs
- Category certificate (SC/ST/OBC/EWS), if applicable
- PwD certificate, if applicable
- Domicile certificate for state counselling
A few things students get wrong
Do not skip a round hoping for something better without understanding the risk. Do not lock choices in a random order.
