If your child is in Class 5 and you were planning to apply for a Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, you have a few more days. The Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) has extended the last date for the Class 6 JNVST 2027 online application to 10 August 2026. The notice is on the official NVS application portal: cbseitms.rcil.gov.in/nvs. The earlier deadline was 31 July 2026.
Latest Updates
[11 Aug 2026, 2:05 AM IST] The application window has closed and the correction window is open today and tomorrow only — 11 and 12 August 2026. The NVS portal announcement reads that the last date was extended up to 10.08.2026 and that the correction window remains open on 11.08.2026 and 12.08.2026. If you need to fix a detail in a submitted form, do it within these two days. There is no separate exam date for summer-bound and winter-bound regions this time — the portal lists 28 November 2026 for both.
You get only one attempt, ever
This is the rule that catches families out, so read it twice. A candidate is allowed to apply for and appear in the JNVST only once. During verification of registration data, if NVS finds that the candidate applied or appeared in any earlier year, the candidature is rejected. There is no second chance and no appeal built into the process. If you applied last year, do not apply again.
Who is eligible
Before the form opens, the portal asks parents to confirm a short declaration of eligibility. All of the following must be true:
- The candidate has never appeared in the JNVST in any previous year.
- The candidate was promoted from Class 4 and was officially admitted to Class 5 in a recognised school on or before 31 July 2026.
- The candidate is applying only for his or her district of residence, and is studying Class 5 either in that same district or in a recognised school in a neighbouring district within a radial distance of 10 kilometres.
- The candidate is an Indian national.
- The family has a valid Aadhaar number for the candidate, or a valid parent residence certificate issued by a competent government authority.
The district rule is strict. You cannot pick a district you like the look of; it has to be the district you live in.
Documents to keep ready before you start
The application is a single-stage process — you fill it and submit it in one go, so it helps to have the scans ready first. The portal asks for these in JPG format only:
- Candidate’s signature — 10 KB to 100 KB
- Parent’s signature — 10 KB to 100 KB
- Candidate’s photograph — 10 KB to 100 KB
- Category certificate for SC, ST, OBC or EWS — 50 KB to 300 KB
- Parent’s residence certificate, issued by a competent government authority, if the candidate does not have an Aadhaar number
One detail on OBC that is easy to get wrong: reservation for OBC candidates follows the Central List. Only a Central OBC certificate from the competent government authority is accepted. If your community is not in the Central List, you must apply as a General candidate. A state OBC certificate will not do.
How to apply
- Open the official NVS application portal at cbseitms.rcil.gov.in/nvs.
- Under Candidate Corner, choose the registration link for Class 6 JNVST 2027-28.
- Read the eligibility declaration and confirm it honestly. A false declaration is found at verification, not at submission.
- Fill the form and upload the scans in the sizes listed above.
- Submit, then use “Print Registration Form” to save a copy. If you lose your registration number, the portal has a “Find Your Registration No.” option.
There is no application fee mentioned on the portal for this stage, and NVS does not ask you to pay any agent. Never share an OTP, an Aadhaar number or a password with anyone offering to fill the form for you.
If navodaya.gov.in does not open
As of the morning of 1 August 2026, the main NVS website navodaya.gov.in was showing a “Site Under Maintenance” message. The application portal itself is working normally and is linked straight from that maintenance page. So if the main site looks broken, go directly to the application portal instead of assuming applications have closed.
What happens after 10 August
Once the window shuts, the next thing to watch for is the admit card, which NVS says will be announced later. The exam is on 28 November 2026, which leaves close to four months of preparation. The JNVST Class 6 paper tests mental ability, arithmetic and language, and the portal has a previous-year question booklet you can download for free to see the pattern. Working through one past paper now is far more useful than buying a guide book you will not finish.
Always confirm on the official website before acting.
