In Science exams, a good diagram is one of the easiest ways to earn marks — and many students lose them by drawing carelessly or skipping the labels. A clear, correctly-labelled diagram can carry marks on its own and make your written answer stronger. Here is how to draw diagrams that score.
Draw with a pencil, neatly
Always use a sharp pencil for diagrams, so you can erase and correct neatly. Draw clean, firm lines and keep the diagram a reasonable size — not tiny, not covering the whole page. A tidy diagram immediately looks more credible to an examiner.
Label everything clearly
Labels are where the marks usually are. Label all the important parts, write the labels horizontally, and use straight lines (a ruler helps) that clearly point to the right part without crossing each other. A correct diagram with missing labels loses easy marks.
Get proportions and accuracy right
Try to keep the parts in roughly correct proportion and position — for example, the chambers of the human heart or the parts of a plant cell in their right places. Accuracy matters more than artistry; you are showing understanding, not making art.
Know when to include a diagram
- When the question asks for one — always draw it.
- When a diagram makes your explanation clearer, even if not explicitly asked.
- For processes and structures (biology), circuits (physics), and apparatus setups.
- Give the diagram a short title or caption where appropriate.
