Let me guess how you are feeling right now. You have opened the Writing Skills section, seen the words Analytical Paragraph, and a small voice inside has said, “I can write essays, I can write letters, but this one with the graph and the numbers is not for me.” Take a breath. That voice is wrong, and by the end of this chapter you will know exactly why.
Here is the honest truth about this question, and it is good news. An analytical paragraph is not a test of English. It is not a test of Mathematics either. It is a test of one small, learnable skill: can you look at a picture made of numbers, notice the two or three things that actually matter, and say them in clear, connected sentences? That is it. There is no hidden trick, no secret vocabulary list, no surprise. The examiner is not waiting for you to slip. The examiner is waiting for you to notice something.
Think of it like this. Suppose your grandmother has never seen a bar graph in her life, and you have one in front of you showing how many students in your school joined four different hobby clubs. She asks, “So what does that picture say, beta?” You would not read every number aloud to her. You would say something like, “Sports is still the biggest club, but look at this, Robotics has shot up from almost nothing to nearly the top.” In that one sentence you have already done what the board wants. You looked, you compared, you reported the big story. An analytical paragraph is simply that same explanation, written down in about a hundred and ten neat words.
We are going to build this skill from absolute zero. We will start with what the question paper actually puts in front of you, we will learn to read a graph in under a minute, we will build a three part shape that works for every single stimulus, and then we will practise on bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, tables, flow charts, maps and word cues until none of them can surprise you. There are worked model answers throughout, every one of them counted and checked against the word limit, and a full practice worksheet at the end.
Go slowly. This chapter is long on purpose, because the skill is worth real marks and because I would rather explain something twice than leave you guessing. Read a section, try the example yourself on rough paper before you look at my version, and only then move on. You are going to be fine.

Your Game Plan
- Start with the shape, not the graph. Read the section on the three-part shape first and memorise it. Once the shape is automatic, every stimulus becomes easy, because you always know what sentence comes next.
- Then learn to read data fast. Spend real time on the sixty second reading routine. Most lost marks come from misreading the picture, not from weak English.
- Build your language toolkit. The sections on comparison, tense and connectives give you about forty ready phrases. Copy them into your notebook. You will reuse them in every answer for the rest of the year.
- Work through the stimulus types one at a time. Bar, line, pie, table, flow chart, cues, map. Do one type per sitting. Write your own answer on paper before reading mine.
- Count your words every single time. Not roughly. Actually count. Do this for your first ten answers and your hand will learn the length by itself.
- Finish with the worksheet. Ten questions, full model answers hidden behind a click. Attempt, then reveal, then compare line by line.

Before we write anything, let us look calmly at where this question lives in your paper, because knowing the exact shape of the question removes half the fear.
Your paper, English Language and Literature, subject code 184, is divided into three sections. Section A is Reading. Section C is Literature. Sitting between them is Section B, Writing Skills with Grammar, and that is where the analytical paragraph waits for you. It carries five marks, it asks for a paragraph of 100 to 120 words, and it comes with an internal choice: two questions are printed and you attempt one. You choose. Nobody chooses for you.
That internal choice is a gift and I want you to treat it as one. It means that if one stimulus looks confusing on the day, you can simply look at the other. It also means you should read both before deciding, which takes about twenty seconds and can save you a great deal of pain.
The stimulus itself, the thing you have to analyse, will be one of a small family: a map, a chart, a graph, or a set of cues. In practice that family includes bar graphs, double or multiple bar graphs, line graphs, pie charts, tables, flow charts, process diagrams, maps and plain verbal outlines. We will meet every one of them in this chapter, so none of them can arrive as a surprise.
Now, the wording of the question. Board questions are written in a fairly predictable way, and once you can take the sentence apart, you know exactly what to deliver. A typical stem reads something like this: “The following bar graph shows the number of students enrolled in four hobby clubs of a school in 2023 and 2025. Write an analytical paragraph in 100 to 120 words analysing the given information.”
Look at what that single sentence hands you for free. It tells you the type of visual, the subject of the visual, the units or categories, and the time frame. All four of those belong in your opening sentence. The question has, in effect, written your first line for you. Students who realise this stop panicking almost immediately.
Stem: The pie chart below shows how one hundred students of Class X travel to school every day. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.

Notice that you have not looked at the chart yet, and you already know four fifths of your opening sentence. This is why we read the stem slowly.
One more thing about the format before we move on, because students ask this every year. You do not need a title. You do not need a heading, a salutation, a signature or bullet points. It is one continuous paragraph. Some students split it into two short paragraphs and are not penalised for it, but there is no advantage either, so keep it simple: one block, indented or not, your choice.
Question: The chart below records how a Class X student divides a typical weekday of 24 hours: sleep 8, school 7, self study 3, travel, meals and chores 3, play and leisure 2, screens 1. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (102 words): The chart compares how a Class ten student divides a typical weekday. Sleep claims the largest share at eight hours, closely followed by school at seven. Self study accounts for three hours, while travel, meals and household chores together take up another three. Only two hours are left for play and leisure, and one hour goes to screens. Thus almost two thirds of the day is committed to sleeping and attending school before any homework begins. The figures suggest that a student’s real freedom lies in the three hour study block, and that protecting it is the key to a balanced routine.
Why it earns the marks: line one names the visual and the topic; the middle sentences group the six figures into sensible pairs instead of listing them one by one; the arithmetic is checked (8 + 7 = 15 out of 24, which really is almost two thirds); and the last sentence offers an interpretation rather than another number. Total 102 words, comfortably inside the band.
Reading The Data Before You Write A Word
Here is the single biggest reason students lose marks on this question, and it has nothing to do with grammar. They start writing immediately. They see a graph, feel the clock ticking, and begin with “The given graph shows…” before they have understood what the graph shows. Six sentences later they are simply reading numbers aloud, they have no ending, and they are at 137 words.
So we are going to build a habit. One minute of looking, then five minutes of writing. I promise you this is faster overall, not slower.
Let us walk through the five steps slowly, using a real set of numbers. Imagine a double bar graph titled Members of four hobby clubs, 2023 and 2025. The bars read: Music 120 then 110; Robotics 40 then 150; Sports 180 then 190; Art 60 then 50.
Step one: title and axes. The title tells you the subject is club membership. The vertical axis is number of students. The horizontal axis is the four clubs. There are two bars per club, one for each year, and a legend tells you which is which. Say all of this to yourself. It sounds obvious, but a student who skips it will later write “percentage of students” when the axis clearly said “number of students”, and that is a factual error.
Step two: biggest and smallest. Biggest bar on the whole graph: Sports 2025 at 190. Smallest: Robotics 2023 at 40. Put a light pencil tick beside each. These two numbers almost always deserve a place in your paragraph.
Step three: the biggest change. Now compare each pair. Music falls by 10. Sports rises by 10. Art falls by 10. Robotics rises by 110. There it is. Robotics is the story, and everything else is background. A graph almost always has one dominant movement, and finding it is the difference between a three mark answer and a five mark answer.
Step four: group what behaves alike. Music, Sports and Art all moved by exactly ten. Three of your four categories are basically flat. So you do not need three separate sentences for them, you need one: “The other three clubs barely shifted, changing by only ten members each.” That one move saves you about twenty five words, and word space is the scarcest resource you have.
Step five: sketch the three parts. In the margin, in your own shorthand: Open: double bar, 4 clubs, 2023 vs 2025. Body: Sports biggest both years; Robotics 40 to 150, almost 4 times; other three nearly flat. Close: tech pulling students from creative clubs. Ten seconds. Now you can write without thinking about structure at all.
These are the rough notes I would want to see in your margin before you write a word. Nothing neat, nothing in full sentences.

Why this matters: a student with these notes cannot ramble, cannot run out of ideas at sentence four, and cannot forget the ending. The notes have already decided everything. All that is left is choosing good words.
Do not move on until this one minute routine feels comfortable. Take any graph from a newspaper this evening and run the five steps on it. Two or three attempts and it becomes automatic.
The Three-Part Shape Of An Analytical Paragraph
This is the heart of the chapter. If you remember only one thing from these notes, remember this shape, because it works for a bar graph, a pie chart, a flow chart, a map and a set of word cues without a single change.
An analytical paragraph has three parts, and they are wildly unequal in size. Think of a sandwich: two thin slices of bread and a thick filling. The bread is your opening and closing, roughly twenty words each. The filling is your body, roughly seventy words. Twenty plus seventy plus twenty gives about a hundred and ten, which sits neatly in the middle of the 100 to 120 band. That is not a coincidence; I chose the proportions so that you land safely without counting mid answer.
Let us look at each part in a single line before we go deep on them separately.

Now, why does this shape work so reliably? Because it mirrors how a human being naturally explains a picture to another human being. You say what the picture is, you point at the interesting bits, you say what you make of it. Examiners are human. When your paragraph follows that natural order, it reads as controlled and confident. When it does not, it reads as a student panicking through a list.
Question: The double bar graph shows the membership of four hobby clubs of a school in 2023 and 2025. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (107 words): The bar graph compares the number of students enrolled in four hobby clubs in 2023 and 2025. Sports remained the most popular choice in both years, rising slightly from 180 members to 190. The most striking change was in Robotics, which climbed from just 40 students to 150, almost four times its earlier strength. Music and Art both slipped by ten members each, falling to 110 and 50 respectively. In percentage terms, Robotics grew from a tenth of the total to almost a third, while Music dropped from thirty per cent to twenty two. Clearly, technology based activities are drawing students away from the traditional creative clubs.
Why it earns the marks: the yellow opening is 17 words and names the visual, the categories and both years. The blue body is 77 words and does four different jobs: it identifies the leader, it isolates the dramatic change, it bundles the two flat categories into one sentence, and it converts raw numbers into shares. The green closing is 13 words and says something the graph does not literally state. Notice that only six figures are quoted out of the eight available, and the paragraph is stronger for it.
Writing The Opening Sentence
Your opening sentence is the cheapest mark in the whole question. It is almost entirely built from the question stem, which means you can write it before you have properly understood the data. Get it right and the examiner relaxes immediately.
A strong opening does four things in about twenty words:
- Names the visual. The bar graph, the line graph, the pie chart, the table, the flow chart, the map, the given cues.
- Names the verb. Shows, compares, illustrates, presents, records, traces, depicts.
- Names the subject and the categories. What is being measured, and across what.
- Names the time frame or scope, if there is one.
Here is the skeleton, and you may use it every time without shame:
Example: The line graph traces the number of books issued by a school library over six months. That is 15 words and it is already a full mark’s worth of clarity.
Now let me show you the difference between a weak and a strong opening, because the gap is wider than students expect.
All six describe the same double bar graph on hobby club membership.

One small refinement. Vary your verb to suit the visual, because it shows you understand what kind of picture you are dealing with.

Copy that table into your notebook tonight. Seven openings, memorised, means you will never again sit staring at a blank line for thirty seconds.
The Body: Grouping, Comparing, Sequencing
The body is where the marks actually live, and it is also where most students go wrong. So let us slow right down.
The wrong instinct is to walk along the graph from left to right and describe each item in turn. Music was 120 then 110. Robotics was 40 then 150. Sports was 180 then 190. Art was 60 then 50. Four sentences, forty words, and you have said absolutely nothing that the reader could not see for themselves. That is transcription, and it is worth very little.
The right instinct is to do three things: group, compare and sequence. Let me take them one at a time.
Grouping
Grouping means bundling together the categories that behave in the same way, so that one sentence carries three facts. In our club data, Music, Sports and Art all changed by exactly ten members. Instead of three sentences you write one: “The other three clubs barely moved, shifting by only ten members each.” You have covered three of your four categories in eleven words and left yourself room to say something intelligent about the fourth.
Ask yourself: which items rose? Which fell? Which stayed flat? Which are large, which are small? Any of those questions gives you a grouping.
Comparing
Comparing means putting two things side by side in the same sentence so the reader feels the difference. Not “Robotics had 150 members” but “Robotics climbed from 40 members to 150, almost four times its earlier strength”. Not “Ratnapur received 320 mm” but “Ratnapur received 320 mm, more than double the 150 mm recorded at Devgarh”.
The little words that do this work are: than, whereas, while, compared with, against, twice, half, more than, almost, only, just. If a body sentence of yours contains none of these, it is probably a listing sentence and should be rewritten.
Sequencing
Sequencing means putting your sentences in an order that has logic behind it, rather than the order the categories happen to appear in the picture. Three orders work well, and you pick whichever fits the stimulus.

Data: Favourite sport of 200 students — cricket 70, football 50, badminton 35, athletics 30, swimming 15.
(a) Transcription, the weak version: “Cricket has 70 students. Football has 50 students. Badminton has 35 students. Athletics has 30 students. Swimming has 15 students.” Five sentences, 20 words, zero analysis. This scores badly.
(b) Biggest first, grouped: “Cricket leads comfortably with 70 followers, forty per cent more than football’s 50. Badminton and athletics sit close together in the middle, on 35 and 30, while swimming trails far behind at just 15.” Same data, three sentences, and every sentence carries a comparison.
(c) Grouped by type: “The two team games, cricket and football, together attract 120 students, exactly sixty per cent of the school. The three individual sports share the remaining 80 between them, with swimming the least popular at only 15.” A completely different and equally valid organisation.
The lesson: the numbers were fixed, but you had at least three ways of arranging them. Choosing an arrangement is the analysis. Check the arithmetic: 70 + 50 = 120, and 120 out of 200 is indeed sixty per cent; 70 is forty per cent more than 50.
Do not rush past this section. Grouping is the single skill that separates a comfortable five from a struggling three. Take the club data, cover my version, and write your own three sentence body. Then compare.
Writing The Closing Sentence
Stay inside the data. Your closing sentence must summarise what the stimulus shows — the dominant trend, the size of the gap, the overall shape. It must not offer an outside explanation for why the pattern exists unless the prompt itself gave you that reason. CBSE examiners treat unstated causes, personal opinions and general knowledge as material outside the task, and marks are lost for it.

Here is where I see the most heartbreak. A student writes a lovely, tightly grouped body, and then finishes with “Thus, the graph is very informative and useful for us.” All that good work, and the last thing the examiner reads is empty.
Your closing sentence must contain an idea that is not printed anywhere in the stimulus. It is the one place in the whole answer where you are allowed, and expected, to think.
There are four reliable ways to close, and every stimulus you meet will suit at least one of them.

Context: a body that has just described printed newspaper sales falling from 900 to 300 while digital subscriptions rose from 200 to 850 between 2020 and 2024.

The Language Of Comparison And Change
This section is your toolkit. Everything else in the chapter is about what to say; this is about the exact words that say it well. Read it with a pen in your hand and copy the tables into your notebook, because these phrases will earn you marks in every single answer for the rest of the year.
Comparatives and superlatives
A comparative compares two things: higher, lower, larger, smaller, greater, steeper, more popular, less common. A superlative picks out the extreme from three or more: the highest, the lowest, the largest, the most popular, the least favoured.
Two small grammar points that students trip over almost every year:
- Use than with comparatives, not then. “Sports was more popular than Art.”
- Never double up. Not “more higher”, not “most highest”. One marker of comparison is enough.
- Use the before a superlative: “the highest figure”, “the smallest share”.

The vocabulary of change
When something moves up or down, you need a verb that carries the size of the movement, not just its direction. This is where most students are poorest and where improvement is quickest.

Approximation: the safety net
You will often need to describe a value you cannot read off the graph exactly, because the bar sits between two gridlines. Approximation words let you be honest and accurate at the same time.
- Slightly under the round number: nearly, almost, just under, close to, a little below — almost 200
- Slightly over: just over, a little more than, upwards of — just over 200
- Loosely: about, around, approximately, roughly, in the region of — around 200
- Emphasising smallness: only, just, barely, merely, as few as — only 15 students
- Emphasising largeness: as many as, a full, no fewer than — as many as 150 students
Percentages, fractions and multiples
Converting a raw number into a share is the fastest way to look analytical, and it is usually simple arithmetic you can do in your head. Learn these equivalences cold.

And for multiples: 2 times is double or twice; 3 times is triple or three times as many; a rise from 40 to 150 is almost four times; a fall to half is halved.

Notice: not one upgraded sentence is longer than fourteen words. Better English here means more precise, not more decorated. Do not reach for flowery adjectives; reach for exact verbs and honest comparisons.
Tense And Voice Choices
This section is short, but getting it wrong scatters small errors through an otherwise good paragraph, and small errors add up. The rule is simpler than students fear.
Which tense?
Ask one question: does the stimulus carry dates?
- No dates (a pie chart of how students travel, a flow chart of a process, a map): use the present simple. “The pie chart illustrates… Forty per cent travel by bus… The process begins when…”
- Past dates (2020 to 2024, January to June of a year that has finished): use the past simple for the data. “Sales fell from 900 to 300… Borrowing peaked in February.”
- Mixed: the sentence that describes the visual itself always stays in the present, even when the data is past. “The line graph traces sales, which fell steadily.” The graph exists now; the events happened then. This is the point students most often get muddled.
Which voice?
Active voice is your default because it is shorter and clearer, and word count is precious. “Forty per cent of students take the school bus” beats “The school bus is taken by forty per cent of students” by three words and reads better.
But the passive is genuinely useful in two places, and using it well shows control:
- Flow charts and processes, where who does the action is unimportant and often unknown. “The bottles are sorted by colour and then are shredded into flakes.” Writing “workers sort the bottles” invents a fact the diagram never gave you.
- When you want the category, not the actor, at the front of the sentence. “Humanities was chosen by ninety five girls” keeps the four streams as the subjects of your sentences, which makes the paragraph feel organised.

Connectives And Linkers That Do Real Work
Linkers are the stitches that turn a pile of sentences into a paragraph. But there is a trap here, and I want to warn you about it before I give you the lists.
Many students memorise a bag of connectives and then sprinkle them randomly. “Moreover, cricket has 70. Furthermore, football has 50. In addition, badminton has 35.” Every one of those linkers means “here is another point in the same direction”, but the sentences are not building anything, they are just standing in a row. The examiner sees decoration, not logic.
A linker earns its place only when it tells the reader something true about the relationship between two ideas. So choose by relationship, not by variety.

Before: “Sports had 180 members. Moreover, Sports had 190 members in 2025. Furthermore, Robotics had 40 members. In addition, Robotics had 150 members. Besides this, Music fell. Also, Art fell.”
Six linkers, all of them meaning “and here is more”, none of them describing a real relationship. The two Sports sentences should have been one comparison; the two Robotics sentences likewise; and Music and Art belong together.
After: “Sports edged up from 180 members to 190, holding its place at the top. Robotics, however, transformed itself, climbing from 40 to 150. Music and Art, by contrast, each shed ten members.”
Result: six sentences become three, six linkers become two, and both surviving linkers signal a genuine contrast. The word count barely moves, from 29 to 32, while the amount of actual analysis roughly triples. This is the trade you are always trying to make.
Bar Graphs And Double Bar Graphs
Bar graphs are the friendliest stimulus in the whole family, and they are also the commonest. Learn to handle them properly and you have covered a large slice of the risk.
A single bar graph shows one measurement across several categories. A double bar graph shows the same categories measured twice, usually in two different years or for two different groups. A multiple bar graph does the same with three or more bars per category. The reading routine is identical for all three.
What to look for in a single bar graph
- The tallest bar and the shortest bar. These almost always earn a mention.
- Any bars that are roughly equal. Group them: “badminton and athletics sit close together, on 35 and 30”.
- The gap between top and bottom. Is the leader twice the runner up, or barely ahead?
- The total, if you can compute it, so you can convert counts into shares.
What to look for in a double bar graph
Here you have a second layer, and this is where the marks are. For each category, ask: did it go up, down or stay flat, and by how much? Then ask the crucial second question: which category changed most? That one is your headline.
Look at the figure above. Sports leads in both years, so it wins on size. But Robotics wins on movement, going from 40 to 150. A weak answer talks only about size. A strong answer talks about both, and gives movement the bigger share of the words.
Question: The double bar graph shows monthly rainfall in millimetres in two districts. Ratnapur: June 210, July 320, August 240, September 130. Devgarh: June 95, July 150, August 80, September 40. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (108 words): The double bar graph compares rainfall in two districts across four months. Coastal Ratnapur received far more rain than inland Devgarh throughout the period. Ratnapur peaked in July with 320 millimetres, more than double the 150 millimetres recorded at Devgarh in the same month. Both districts showed the same overall shape, rising to a July maximum and then tapering off in August and September. Devgarh, however, fell away much faster, ending the season at only 40 millimetres against Ratnapur’s 130. Overall, both districts share the same monsoon timeline, peaking in July, but Ratnapur receives far heavier rain throughout and holds on to it longer as the season ends.
Why it earns the marks: only four of the eight figures are quoted, and each one is doing a job. The paragraph identifies a shared shape (both peak in July) before isolating the difference (Devgarh falls faster), which is exactly the group-then-contrast move. The closing stays strictly inside the data, naming the shared timeline and the size of the gap instead of guessing at a reason, because examiners deduct for outside information. Check the arithmetic: 320 really is more than double 150, and Devgarh’s drop from 150 to 40 is a 73 per cent fall against Ratnapur’s 59 per cent. Word count 108.
Question: The bar graph shows average weekly screen time in hours for four age groups: 8–10 years, 7 hours; 11–13 years, 12 hours; 14–16 years, 20 hours; 17–19 years, 26 hours. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (107 words): The bar graph records the average weekly screen time of students in four age groups. Time on screens rises steadily with age. The youngest group, aged eight to ten, spends about seven hours a week, whereas eleven to thirteen year olds spend twelve. The jump is sharpest after that: fourteen to sixteen year olds average twenty hours, nearly three times the youngest group. The oldest band, seventeen to nineteen, tops the chart at twenty six hours. In other words, every step up the age ladder adds another five to eight hours of screen time, and the weekly total almost quadruples between the first group and the last.
Why it earns the marks: the second sentence names the pattern before any figures appear, which immediately signals analysis rather than transcription. Every increment is verified: 7 to 12 is five hours, 12 to 20 is eight, 20 to 26 is six, so “five to eight hours” is accurate. And 26 divided by 7 is 3.7, which honestly supports “almost quadruples” rather than the lazier “four times”. Word count 107.
Line Graphs And Trends Over Time
A line graph is a story with a beginning, a middle and an end, and time always runs left to right along the bottom. Because of that built in order, you should almost always write a line graph chronologically. Do not jump about.
The vocabulary you built earlier now pays for itself. A line graph is nothing but a sequence of rises, falls and flat stretches, and your job is to name each one with a verb of the right strength.
The four features to hunt for
- The overall direction. Ignore the wiggles for a moment. Over the whole period, did it rise, fall, or go up and then come down? Say this early; it frames everything.
- The peak and the trough. The highest point and the lowest point, with their dates. Always worth naming.
- The turning points. The moment the line changes direction. These are the interesting bits and usually have a reason behind them.
- Crossovers, if there are two or more lines. The moment one overtakes the other is nearly always the headline of the whole graph.
Question: The line graph shows the number of books issued by a school library over six months: January 210, February 240, March 180, April 90, May 60, June 250. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (107 words): The line graph shows the number of books issued by a school library over six months. Borrowing began strongly in January with 210 books and rose to a first peak of 240 in February. A steady decline then set in, with March falling to 180 and April dropping sharply to 90. May recorded the lowest figure of the period, only 60 books, which coincides with the summer holidays and the examination season. June, however, saw a dramatic recovery to 250 books, the highest reading on the graph. Overall, library use mirrors the school calendar closely, collapsing during breaks and reviving as soon as a new session opens.
Why it earns the marks: the verbs escalate correctly — “rose”, then “declined”, then “dropping sharply”, then “dramatic recovery” — matching the real sizes of each move. All six months are covered, but three of them are bundled into a single “steady decline” sentence, which is what buys the space for the interpretation at the end. The closing links the shape to a cause the graph itself never states. Word count 107.
Two lines on one graph
When two lines share a graph, the examiner is almost certainly interested in the relationship between them, not in each one separately. So resist the urge to describe line one fully and then line two fully. Instead, describe them together, and make the crossover your centrepiece.
Question: The line graph shows sales of printed newspapers and digital subscriptions at a city newsstand. Printed: 2020 – 900, 2021 – 720, 2022 – 550, 2023 – 420, 2024 – 300. Digital: 2020 – 200, 2021 – 370, 2022 – 550, 2023 – 700, 2024 – 850. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (104 words): The graph traces the sale of printed newspapers and digital subscriptions at a city newsstand between 2020 and 2024. Printed copies fell continuously, sliding from 900 units in 2020 to just 300 in 2024, a loss of two thirds. Digital subscriptions moved in the opposite direction, climbing from 200 to 850 over the same five years. The two lines crossed in 2022, when both stood at about 550. Since that crossover the gap has widened steadily in favour of digital. Clearly, readers have not stopped reading the news; they have simply migrated from paper to screen, and the shift shows no sign of slowing.
Why it earns the marks: the two lines are handled as a pair, not one after the other. The crossover gets its own sentence because it is the single most important event on the graph. The fraction is checked: 900 down to 300 really is a loss of two thirds. And the closing reframes the whole thing as a migration rather than a decline, which is genuine interpretation. Word count 104.
Pie Charts And Proportions
A pie chart has one job: it shows how a whole is divided up. That single fact should shape everything about how you write it.
Because the parts must add to one hundred per cent, the natural order is biggest slice first, smallest last. And because every slice is a share, your language should be the language of proportion: a third, almost half, a quarter, barely a tenth, the largest slice, the smallest share.
A quick checklist for any pie chart
- Do the slices add to 100? Check. If they do not, you have misread one.
- Which is the largest and which the smallest?
- Are any two slices roughly equal? Pair them.
- Can two or three slices be grouped under one idea? Add them.
- Is the total given in real units as well as percentages, so you can talk in students or rupees rather than only in per cent?
Question: The pie chart shows how one hundred students of Class X travel to school: school bus 40 per cent, bicycle 25, walking 20, private car 10, public transport 5. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (105 words): The pie chart illustrates how one hundred students of Class ten travel to school each day. The school bus is by far the commonest choice, carrying forty per cent of the pupils. Cycling comes next at twenty five per cent, followed closely by walking at twenty per cent. Together these two non motorised options account for almost half the class. Private cars are used by only ten students, while public transport is the least favoured route at five per cent. In short, nearly half the students reach school under their own power, and only a small minority depend on private vehicles for the daily journey.
Why it earns the marks: slices are taken largest to smallest, and the fourth sentence does the crucial grouping move, adding 25 and 20 to make 45, which is fairly described as “almost half”. Because the total is one hundred students, the paragraph can switch naturally between “ten students” and “five per cent” without any confusion. The closing turns the arithmetic into a comment about habits. Word count 105.
Question: The pie chart shows how a family of four spends a monthly income of Rs 60,000: housing 30 per cent, food 25, education 20, transport 10, healthcare 8, savings 7. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (105 words): The pie chart shows how a family of four spends its monthly income of sixty thousand rupees. Housing takes the largest slice at thirty per cent, or eighteen thousand rupees. Food follows at twenty five per cent, and education claims a further twenty. Together these three essentials swallow three quarters of the budget. Transport accounts for ten per cent, healthcare for eight, and only seven per cent is set aside as savings. The chart therefore reveals a household with very little cushion: a single unexpected expense would wipe out the entire monthly saving, which suggests that the transport and food shares deserve a careful review.
Why it earns the marks: one percentage is converted into rupees (thirty per cent of sixty thousand is exactly eighteen thousand) to show the reader what the share means in real money. The three biggest slices are added to make seventy five per cent, correctly described as three quarters. The closing is a recommendation, which is a legitimate and often impressive way to end. Word count 105.
Tables With Several Columns
Tables frighten students more than graphs do, and I understand why. A graph hands you a shape you can see in one glance. A table hands you a grid of numbers and expects you to find the shape yourself.
The good news is that there is a reliable method, and once you know it a table becomes the easiest stimulus of all, because tables usually contain a very clean story.
Let us do this properly with a real grid. Suppose the table looks like this:

Down the columns: Section B tops the average column and the pass column. Section C is bottom of both. But look at the third column — Section C tops it. That mismatch is the story of this table, and a student who spots it is writing a five mark answer.
Across the rows: B is consistently strong. A is consistently middling. C is inconsistent: weak on average, strongest at the top end. That inconsistency has a meaning, and saying what it means is the analysis.
Question: The table shows the performance of three sections of Class X in a common Mathematics test. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (113 words): The table presents the performance of three sections of Class ten in a common Mathematics test. Section B posted the highest average at 78 marks, six points ahead of Section A and eleven ahead of Section C. Section B also recorded the best pass percentage, ninety two, while Section C trailed at seventy six. Interestingly, the highest individual score of 98 came from Section C, showing that a weak average can still hide an outstanding performer. Section A sat between the other two on both the average and the pass percentage. Overall, Section B was the most consistent group, whereas Section C combined the widest spread of ability with the lowest overall achievement.
Why it earns the marks: the differences are computed rather than just reported (78 minus 72 is six, 78 minus 67 is eleven), which is exactly what “analysing” a table looks like. The word “interestingly” flags the mismatch and earns its place, unlike a decorative “moreover”. The closing uses the idea of spread, which appears nowhere in the table but follows logically from a low average sitting beside the highest score. Word count 113.
Flow Charts And Process Diagrams
Flow charts feel different from graphs, and they are. There are usually no numbers at all. Instead there are boxes joined by arrows, and your paragraph has to walk along those arrows in order.
This actually makes flow charts the most predictable stimulus in the set, because the structure of your answer is decided for you. You cannot reorder a process. Step three comes after step two, always.
The language of process
Three tools do almost all the work here.
- Sequence markers. Initially, first, then, next, after that, once this is done, subsequently, finally. Use four or five of these, spaced out.
- The passive voice. The bottles are sorted, the flakes are melted, the yarn is woven. This keeps the focus on the material rather than on people the diagram never named.
- Present simple tense. A process is a general truth, so it stays in the present, even if the diagram describes something that happened last year.
One more thing that lifts a flow chart answer: combine two small steps into one sentence when they naturally belong together. “The cleaned bottles are washed and shredded into small flakes” covers two boxes in ten words. That is how you fit seven stages into seventy words and still have room for a proper ending.
Question: The flow chart shows how a new book travels from purchase to reader in a school library: order placed with supplier → consignment checked against invoice → entered in accession register → labelled and covered → shelved by subject → uploaded to online catalogue. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (107 words): The flow chart traces the journey of a new book from purchase to reader. The process begins when the librarian places an order with an approved supplier. Once the consignment arrives, each title is checked against the invoice and then entered in the accession register with a unique number. The book is next labelled with a spine sticker and given a protective jacket. After that it is shelved under its subject section, and finally its details are uploaded to the online catalogue so that students can search for it. Thus a book passes through six carefully ordered stages, each one making it easier to trace and borrow.
Why it earns the marks: the sequence markers — begins, once, then, next, after that, finally — carry the reader through without a single number. Two pairs of boxes are merged into single sentences to save words. The passive is used correctly for the stages where no actor is shown, while the one human action the chart does name, the librarian ordering, stays active. The closing counts the stages and states what the whole system is for, which is more than a summary. Word count 107.
Cue-Based And Map-Based Prompts
These two look like the odd ones out because they contain no graph at all. In fact they follow exactly the same three part shape, and once you see that, they become the easiest questions of the lot.
Cue-based prompts
A cue-based prompt gives you a short list of facts, usually in note form, and asks you to turn them into a connected paragraph. A very common pattern is before and after: how a village, a school, a river or a market has changed over some period.
The trap here is that cues look so easy that students simply rewrite them as separate sentences. That is transcription again, and it scores poorly. Your job is to connect them: to notice which cues belong together, which one causes the others, and what the whole set adds up to.
For a before-and-after cue set, group your body like this: two or three sentences on the earlier situation, then two or three on the present, with a clear pivot word between them — today, now, over the past decade, by contrast.
Question: Using the cues below, write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words on how Bhimtal village has changed in ten years.
Then: single dirt track · nearest school five kilometres away · four hours of electricity daily · small rain fed farms.
Now: metalled road to highway · secondary school in village · solar power almost all day · vegetables and dairy farming.
Model answer (103 words): The cues describe how Bhimtal village has changed over the past decade. Ten years ago the village depended entirely on a single dirt track, and children walked five kilometres to the nearest school. Electricity was available for barely four hours a day, and most families farmed small rain fed plots. Today a metalled road links the village to the highway, a secondary school functions within the village itself, and solar panels supply power almost round the clock. Farming has also diversified into vegetables and dairy. Overall, better connectivity appears to be the single change that has unlocked every other improvement recorded in Bhimtal.
Why it earns the marks: the past block and the present block are cleanly separated by the pivot word “Today”, so the contrast is felt rather than announced. Every cue is used, but they are bundled two at a time rather than listed one per sentence. The tenses are correct throughout: past simple for the earlier situation, present simple for the current one. The closing picks out one cue as the cause of the rest, which no cue actually said. Word count 103.
Map-based prompts
A map asks you to describe a layout: a park, a school campus, a proposed market, a route. Here your organising principle is not size or time but space, and you need the vocabulary of position.
- Compass: to the north, along the eastern edge, in the south west corner, at the northern tip.
- Relative position: beside, opposite, adjacent to, between, behind, in the centre, on either side of, midway along.
- Movement and access: the path runs from, a track loops around, the entrance opens onto, visitors enter at, the route leads to.
Choose one route through the map and stick to it. The simplest reliable choice is: start at the entrance, follow the main path, and describe things as you pass them. That gives your reader a tour rather than a jumble.
And remember that a map answer still needs an analytical closing. Do not stop at “there is also a car park”. Ask: is the design sensible? What has the planner tried to achieve? That question turns a description into an analysis.
Question: The map shows the layout proposed for the new Green Meadows community park: main gate on the eastern side facing the residential blocks; a walking track looping the whole boundary; children’s play area in the north west corner; open air gym and jogging lane along the southern edge; lawn and small amphitheatre in the centre. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (108 words): The map shows the layout proposed for the new Green Meadows community park. The main gate opens on the eastern side, facing the residential blocks, and a broad walking track loops around the entire boundary. Inside this loop the space is divided into three zones. The children’s play area occupies the north western corner, farthest from the road and therefore the quietest spot. An open air gym and a jogging lane sit along the southern edge, while the central section is reserved for a lawn and a small amphitheatre. Overall, the design separates noisy activities from quiet ones and keeps every zone within easy reach of the gate.
Why it earns the marks: the paragraph announces a structure (“divided into three zones”) before describing the zones, which is the map equivalent of grouping. Compass directions are used precisely and consistently. The phrase “farthest from the road and therefore the quietest spot” is an inference, not a label on the map, and inferences like that are where the fourth and fifth marks live. The closing evaluates the design instead of merely finishing the tour. Word count 108.
Managing The 100 To 120 Word Limit
Let us be honest about how the word limit is treated, because rumours cause a lot of unnecessary anxiety.
Examiners are generally not asked to hunt for a word count and slash marks for a paragraph of 124 words. What actually happens is subtler and more dangerous. A paragraph that is far too long is usually long because it is padded or because it lists every number, and it loses marks for those faults. A paragraph that is far too short is short because it has left out analysis, and it loses marks for that. The word limit is a symptom, not the disease.
So the right attitude is: aim for about 110 words because that length naturally forces good habits, and do not panic if you land on 97 or 123.
If you are over the limit: what to cut, in order
- Opening padding. “It is very clearly seen from the given graph which has been given to us that” becomes “The graph shows”. Saved: about fourteen words, at no cost.
- Repeated nouns. “the number of students in the Sports club” becomes “Sports”. Once the reader knows the units, you never repeat them.
- Listed figures you do not need. Each unnecessary number costs you five or six words with its sentence frame.
- Empty intensifiers. Very, really, quite, extremely, totally, absolutely. Almost always deletable.
- Merge two sentences that share a subject. “Music fell. Art also fell.” becomes “Music and Art both fell.”
If you are under the limit: what to add, in order
- A conversion. Turn a raw number into a share or a multiple. “150 students, almost a third of the total.”
- A grouping sentence. “The remaining three clubs barely moved.”
- A comparison you skipped. Pick two categories and put them in one sentence with “whereas”.
- A fuller closing. Add a consequence or a recommendation to your summary judgement.
Notice that everything on the “add” list makes the answer better, not merely longer. That is deliberate. Never pad. If you genuinely cannot think of anything to add, hand in 96 words of good analysis rather than 110 words with fourteen words of waffle glued on.
First draft (125 words — five over the limit and badly padded): “It is very clearly seen from the given bar graph which has been given to us that the bar graph is showing us the number of students who have chosen four different hobby clubs in the two different years of 2023 and also 2025. In the year 2023 the number of students in the Sports club was 180 and in the year 2025 the number of students in the Sports club was 190. In the year 2023 the number of students in the Robotics club was 40 and in the year 2025 the number of students in the Robotics club was 150. The Music club had 120 and then 110. The Art club had 60 and then 50 in these two years respectively as shown.”
Revised (106 words): The bar graph compares membership of four hobby clubs in 2023 and 2025. Sports stayed the largest club in both years, edging up from 180 members to 190. Robotics, however, transformed itself, leaping from 40 students to 150, almost four times its earlier size. Music and Art each shed ten members, closing at 110 and 50. Because the school total also grew from 400 to 500, Robotics gained share as well as numbers, climbing from a tenth of all club members to nearly a third. The figures suggest that a single well run technical club can reshape a school’s entire co curricular profile within two years.
What changed: nineteen words came off the total, but far more importantly the draft went from zero analysis to five separate analytical moves — a comparison, a multiple, a grouping, a share conversion and an interpretation. The padded opening alone gave back about twenty words. Notice that the revision quotes the same figures; it simply stops repeating the phrase “the number of students in the … club” five times.
How The Five Marks Are Split
Knowing roughly where the marks sit changes how you spend your six minutes, so this is worth understanding and the weights below are the ones the official marking scheme uses.
Every version of the marking scheme for the writing tasks in Section B divides the marks between the same three things:

These are the whole-number weights the official CBSE marking scheme uses for the five-mark writing tasks, so learn them exactly as they stand. Notice the shape: content and organisation carry two marks each, and language accuracy carries the last one. That has two practical consequences.

The gap: Script A is not badly written. It is simply not analytical. That single difference is worth two or three marks, every time.
Analytical Paragraph vs Descriptive Writing
Students often ask me why this question is called an analytical paragraph and not just a paragraph. The name is doing real work, and understanding it is worth several marks.
Descriptive writing paints a picture. It uses adjectives, appeals to the senses, and aims to make the reader see or feel something. Analytical writing examines evidence. It uses comparisons, proportions and relationships, and aims to make the reader understand something.
Both are good writing. Only one of them scores here.

Data: library book issues falling from 240 in February to 60 in May, then recovering to 250 in June.
Descriptive (wrong register for this question): “The library was once a wonderfully busy place, full of eager young readers hunting happily among the tall shelves. Then came the long, quiet summer, and the beautiful old room fell silent and empty. But in June life returned, and once again the shelves were alive with excited voices.”
Analytical (correct register): “Borrowing peaked at 240 books in February before sliding steadily to only 60 in May, the lowest point of the period. June brought a sharp recovery to 250, the highest figure on the graph. Library use therefore tracks the school calendar almost exactly.”
The difference: the descriptive version is pleasant English and would score very poorly, because it reports not a single figure and makes no comparison. The analytical version is plainer but does four things the first cannot: it quotes evidence, names the extremes, measures the movement, and draws a conclusion. Save your adjectives for the story writing question.
Common Mistakes Students Make
I have gathered here every error I see repeatedly, with the fix beside it. Read this section the night before your exam. It takes four minutes and it is probably the highest value four minutes in the whole chapter.

I feel that we should all use the bus because it saves petrol and it is also good for our environment which is very important nowadays.”

None of these mistakes is difficult to avoid. They persist only because students never sit down and read a list like this one. You just have, so you are already ahead.
The Last Sixty Seconds Checklist
You have written your paragraph. There is a little time left. What you do now is worth roughly one whole mark, and almost nobody does it properly.
Run through these ten checks in order. They are arranged so that the most expensive errors come first, in case you run out of time halfway.
- Does sentence one name the visual and the topic? If it starts with a number, rewrite it.
- Is there a real closing sentence? Not a repeat, not “the graph is useful” — an actual idea.
- Are the figures right? Glance back at the stimulus and check every number you quoted. This is the single most valuable check on the list.
- Any “increased by” that should be “increased to”?
- Is the tense consistent? Visual in the present, dated data in the past, and no drifting between the two.
- Subject verb agreement. “The graph shows”, not “the graph show”. “The figures suggest”, not “the figures suggests”.
- Any double comparatives? Delete “more” from “more higher”, “most” from “most highest”.
- Did any “I”, “we” or “you” slip in? Remove them.
- Word count. Dot every fifth word. Aim to be inside 100 to 120.
- Is it one paragraph with no bullets, no title and no signature?
That is the whole method. Read, plan, shape, write, check. Nothing in it is difficult; all of it needs practice. So let us practise.

Q1. The bar graph shows the favourite sport of 200 students in a senior school: cricket 70, football 50, badminton 35, athletics 30, swimming 15. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (105 words): The bar graph shows the favourite sport of two hundred students in a senior school. Cricket is the clear leader with seventy followers, more than double the thirty who choose athletics. Football takes second place with fifty supporters, while badminton attracts thirty five. Athletics and swimming bring up the rear with thirty and fifteen respectively. Put differently, cricket and football together account for sixty per cent of the whole school, whereas swimming stays below eight per cent. The pattern suggests that team games with heavy television coverage dominate student interest, and that individual sports will need active promotion if they are to close the gap.
Marking notes: the order is largest to smallest. Two conversions are made and both are exact — 70 plus 50 is 120, which is sixty per cent of 200, and 15 out of 200 is 7.5 per cent, honestly described as “barely eight per cent”. The closing offers a cause and a recommendation without inventing any data.
Q2. The line graph records visitors to a hill station museum: January 400, February 620, March 900, April 2,100, May 2,600, June 1,200. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (104 words): The line graph records the number of visitors to a hill station museum across six months. Numbers begin modestly at 400 in January and climb slowly through February and March to 900. April brings a sharp surge to 2,100, and May records the peak of the period at 2,600 visitors. June then falls back steeply to 1,200. The rise and fall correspond neatly with the summer holiday season, which opens in April and closes by mid June. Overall the museum earns most of its footfall in just two months, so a strategy to attract off season visitors would help spread the pressure more evenly.
Marking notes: the first three months are bundled into one “climb slowly” sentence, which is what buys space for the interpretation. The verbs escalate correctly: climb, surge, peak, fall back steeply. The closing is a recommendation drawn from the shape of the line, not from any new figure.
Q3. The pie chart shows household waste in a residential colony: organic 45 per cent, plastic 20, paper 15, glass 10, metal 6, other 4. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (105 words): The pie chart analyses the composition of household waste collected in a residential colony. Organic kitchen waste forms the biggest portion at forty five per cent, almost half of everything thrown away. Plastic follows at twenty per cent, and paper accounts for fifteen. Glass and metal contribute ten and six per cent respectively, while a small residual category makes up the remaining four. What stands out is that nearly half the waste is compostable at home, and a further fifty one per cent could be recycled. Barely four per cent genuinely needs a landfill, so segregation at source could shrink this colony’s waste burden dramatically.
Marking notes: the arithmetic is exact. The slices total 100. Plastic, paper, glass and metal add to 51 per cent, which is the recyclable group, and that leaves exactly 4 per cent as true residue. Grouping four separate slices under one idea is the move that lifts this from a description to an analysis.
Q4. The table compares three states. Kerala: literacy 94 per cent, enrolment 98 per cent, dropout 2 per cent. Maharashtra: 82, 91, 7. Bihar: 62, 79, 18. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (107 words): The table compares three states on literacy, school enrolment and dropout rate. Kerala leads on every count, with ninety four per cent literacy, ninety eight per cent enrolment and a dropout rate of only two per cent. Maharashtra occupies the middle position at eighty two per cent literacy and ninety one per cent enrolment, though its dropout rate of seven per cent is more than triple Kerala’s. Bihar trails on all three measures, recording sixty two per cent literacy and a dropout rate of eighteen per cent. The figures show that high enrolment alone means little unless a state can also keep its children in the classroom.
Marking notes: the rows are taken in rank order, which is the natural sequence for a table like this. One relationship is computed rather than copied: seven is indeed more than triple two. The closing draws out the tension between the enrolment column and the dropout column, which is the real story hidden in the grid.
Q5. The flow chart shows how a discarded plastic bottle becomes fabric: collected from homes and bins → sorted by colour and grade → labels and caps removed → washed and shredded into flakes → melted and extruded into filaments → spun into yarn → woven into fabric. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (106 words): The flow chart explains how a discarded plastic bottle is turned into fabric. Collection is the first step: bottles are gathered from homes and bins by waste pickers. They are then sorted by colour and grade, after which labels and caps are stripped off. The cleaned bottles are washed and shredded into small flakes. These flakes are melted and forced through fine nozzles to form long filaments, which are spun into yarn. The yarn is finally woven into fabric for bags and jackets. In all, seven stages separate the roadside bin from a finished garment, and each stage depends entirely on careful sorting at the start.
Marking notes: present simple throughout, passive voice for the stages with no named actor, and sequence markers spaced out rather than crowded. The closing counts the stages and names the one on which the rest depend, which is a judgement about the process rather than a summary of it.
Q6. Using these cues, write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words on the restoration of Kalinga Fort. Before: cracked walls · silted moat · stray cattle in courtyards · under 200 visitors a year. After: 2021 survey by state archaeology department · ramparts repaired with traditional lime mortar · footpath, signboards and interpretation centre added · nearly 9,000 visitors a year · 12 local guides employed.
Model answer (106 words): The cues outline the restoration of the historic Kalinga Fort. Before the project began, the fort lay neglected: its walls were cracked, the moat had silted up, and stray cattle wandered through the courtyards. Fewer than two hundred visitors came each year. Restoration started in 2021 with a survey by the state archaeology department, followed by repairs to the ramparts using traditional lime mortar. A footpath, signboards and a small interpretation centre were then added. Today the fort receives nearly nine thousand visitors annually and employs twelve local guides. The revival shows how careful conservation can turn a crumbling ruin into a working source of livelihood.
Marking notes: the before block and the after block are cleanly separated, with the past perfect (“had silted up”) used correctly for the earlier condition. Three cues are bundled into a single colon sentence to save words. The closing names what the whole set of cues adds up to — livelihood, not just tidiness — which no individual cue stated.
Q7. The double bar graph shows stream choices in Class XI. Science: 120 boys, 100 girls. Commerce: 80 boys, 45 girls. Humanities: 30 boys, 95 girls. Vocational: 25 boys, 20 girls. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (106 words): The double bar graph compares the stream choices of boys and girls in Class eleven. Science is the most popular stream overall, chosen by one hundred and twenty boys and one hundred girls. Commerce shows the widest gap in favour of boys, attracting eighty against only forty five girls. Humanities reverses the pattern completely, with ninety five girls compared with thirty boys, making it the only stream where girls form a clear majority. Vocational courses remain the smallest option for both groups. Overall, boys cluster around science and commerce, while girls spread themselves more evenly, and subject choice still follows familiar gender lines at this stage.
Marking notes: the streams are taken in order of total size, and each sentence carries a comparison rather than a pair of figures. The gap claims are computed, not guessed: Commerce differs by 35 in favour of boys, Humanities by 65 in favour of girls. So Humanities has the larger gap overall, and Commerce only holds the record among the streams boys dominate — which is exactly what the phrase “in favour of boys” is doing. Precision of that kind is worth a mark on its own.
Q8. Find and correct the five errors in this extract, then rewrite it as three clean sentences. “It is very clearly evident from the given bar graph which has been given to us that the number of students in the Robotics club have increased by 150 in the year 2025. This is more higher than any other club in the school. I personally feel that we all should join Robotics because technology is the future of today.”
The five errors:
- Padded opening with “given” used twice. Replace the whole clause with “The bar graph shows that”.
- Subject verb agreement: “the number … have increased” should be “the number … has increased”. “Number” is singular here.
- “Increased by 150” is a data error. Robotics went from 40 to 150, so it increased by 110.
- Double comparative: “more higher” should be “higher”, or better still “the sharpest rise”.
- Wrong register: “I personally feel that we all should” is a personal opinion. Route it through the data instead. (“Technology is the future of today” is also a redundancy worth deleting.)
Rewritten (three sentences, 47 words): The bar graph shows that membership of the Robotics club rose from 40 students to 150 in 2025, an increase of 110. This is the sharpest rise recorded by any club in the school. The figures suggest that technical activities are attracting students faster than any other kind.
Q9. The draft below is 136 words and almost pure transcription. Rewrite it as a proper analytical paragraph within the 100–120 word limit. Data: metro passengers, 2019 – 40 lakh, 2020 – 15 lakh, 2021 – 28 lakh, 2022 – 46 lakh, 2023 – 62 lakh.
Draft to be repaired: “It is very clearly seen from the given line graph which has been given to us that the line graph is showing us the total number of passengers who travelled by the city metro in each of the five years starting from 2019 and going up to 2023. In the year 2019 the number of passengers was 40 lakh. In the year 2020 the number of passengers was 15 lakh. In the year 2021 the number of passengers was 28 lakh. In the year 2022 the number of passengers was 46 lakh. In the year 2023 the number of passengers was 62 lakh. So we can say that the number of passengers first went down and then it went up again and finally it became very high, which is a very good thing for the city.”
Model answer (109 words): The line graph traces metro ridership in a city between 2019 and 2023. Numbers collapsed in 2020, falling from 40 lakh passengers to only 15 lakh, little more than a third of the previous year. Recovery began in 2021, when ridership climbed back to 28 lakh, and continued into 2022 with 46 lakh, comfortably above the pre-2020 level. By 2023 the figure had reached 62 lakh, more than four times the low point and over half as much again as in 2019. Overall the graph shows a sharp shock followed by a strong and sustained rebound, suggesting that commuters returned to the metro quickly once normal working life resumed.
Marking notes: every claim is checked. 15 out of 40 is 0.375, so “little more than a third” is honest while “barely a third” would not be. 62 divided by 15 is 4.1, supporting “more than four times”. 62 against 40 is a rise of 55 per cent, which is exactly “over half as much again”. The rewrite drops 27 words and adds four separate analytical moves.
Q10. The map shows the proposed Riverside Science Park: entrance at the south west corner beside the bus stop; a single curving path from the gate to the far end linking four exhibit halls in numbered order; planetarium at the northern tip, set back from the road; cafeteria and rest area midway along the path; parking along the eastern boundary. Write an analytical paragraph in 100–120 words.
Model answer (104 words): The map shows the layout of the proposed Riverside Science Park. The entrance lies at the south west corner, beside the bus stop, so that visitors arriving by public transport step almost straight into the grounds. A single curving path runs from the gate to the far end of the site, linking the four exhibit halls in numbered order. The planetarium occupies the northern tip, set well back from the road to reduce noise. A cafeteria and rest area sit midway along the path, and parking is confined to the eastern boundary. Overall the plan guides visitors along one clear route without any backtracking.
Marking notes: the tour follows a single route from the entrance inward, which is the easiest structure to keep clear. Two inferences are drawn from the layout rather than read off it — the convenience of the bus stop and the noise reduction behind the planetarium — and inferences of that kind are where the top marks sit. The closing evaluates the design as a whole.
One Question Better Than Yesterday
You have reached the end of a long chapter, and I want to leave you with the only study advice that has ever really worked.
Do not try to master analytical paragraphs today. Try to write one more correct answer than you managed yesterday. If you wrote two paragraphs yesterday and both drifted past 130 words, write three today and get one of them inside the limit. If your closings have been weak all week, fix one closing properly this evening. That is all. One small, honest improvement.
This idea has a name, kaizen, and it simply means continuous small improvement. It works because progress in writing is never dramatic. Nobody wakes up suddenly able to analyse a graph. What happens instead is that the opening sentence stops being difficult, then grouping becomes automatic, then one day you notice that you finished a paragraph in five minutes and it was genuinely good. Each of those steps came from a single extra question, done properly, on some ordinary evening.
So pick one question from the worksheet above. Write it out fully, count the words, check every figure. Tomorrow, pick another. Ten evenings from now these five marks will be the easiest ones in your entire paper, and you will wonder why you were ever nervous about a bar graph.
